This blog will showcase the adventures in Brazil for the Dialogue of Civilizations focused on Alternative Energies. We will be learning the about different alternative energy technologies, visiting renewable energy sites and talking with industrial leaders of these technologies in Brazil. We will be immersed in the Brazil to learn their culture and language. I will use this blog to send updates on what we are doing throughout our trip and post pictures of the group during outings.

Day 19
Today we hiked the highest point in São Paulo, Jaragua. We hiked through the jungle and saw local wildlife! It was a beautiful day for the hike!

Day 18
Today we went to a large indoor fruit market called Mercadão. We had pastel de Bacalhau and mortendella sandwiches for lunch, then sampled many exotic Brazilian fruits.

Day 17
This morning we learned about sustainable cities, specifically Curitiba, a city in Brazil that boasts as one of the most sustainable cities in the world.
In the afternoon we took a samba dance class and visited the Latin America Museum.

Day 15
Today we presented ideas on how to implement alternative energy technologies in Boston. Then we headed to the AfroBrasileiro museum where we learned of the different ways African culture has influenced Brazilian culture.

Day 14
Today we went to Tonon bioethanol plant in Brotas, São Paulo, Brazil. We learned and saw how they harvest sugarcane and use it to produce Ethanol and refined sugar. We even got to taste the sugarcane!

Day 13
Today we went to a Palmeiras versus Goias futebol game! Though the Palmeiras lost, it was a fun and exciting afternoon of soccer with a full stadium and tons of chanting!

Day 12
Today we went to a coffee farm where we learned about the history of coffee in Brazil. We also learned how coffee is grown and processed. We enjoyed the views of the beautiful Brazilian countryside as well!

Today we visited the Henry Borden Hydroelectric Plant in Cubatão. We learned about their hydroelectric system and saw their massive turbines and generators!

Today we visited CPFL, a solar photo voltaic company in Campinas, Brazil. We learned how they research different types of solar PV panels and how different configurations affect their electrical output.

Today we learned about how energy is generated and what some pros and cons there are for alternative energies.
In Portuguese Language class we performed skits on how to order food at restaurants in Brazil.

Days 5 and 6
We had a busy first weekend! Saturday we went to an antique market in São Paulo where we tried Brazilian street food!
Then we headed to Beco do Batman, which is an alley way where artists paint mural's on the walls.
Sunday we took a historical walking tour of the old downtown São Paulo and then got acai as a treat afterwards.

Day 4
We learned about the need to replace fossil fuels in the Alternative energy class in the morning.
Then we learned about some of the politics of present day Brazil and then how Brazil was colonized by the Portuguese in the Brazilian Culture class taught by Professor Gustavo.
